Adam Hasner Hammers Obama on Social Security Threat

Former state House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, now running for the Republican nomination to take on Democratic U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson in 2012, took aim at President Barack Obama on Wednesday.

Hasner knocked Obama for mulling over freezing Social Security payments in case a federal government shutdown occurred.

"President Obama's threat yesterday to withhold Social Security payments if he doesn't get his way on raising taxes is shameful. It's a new low for Washington. And quite frankly, it's beneath the office he holds,” said Hasner. "There are more than 3.7 million Floridians who depend on Social Security to make ends meet. They should not be used as pawns in the president's political games. Republicans should do everything they can to prevent this president from risking Social Security and Medicare further through unsustainable spending.

"President Obama is playing political games on one of the most critical issues of our generation,” added Hasner. “The Republican leadership in Washington must not. It's time to stop floating bad bargains and grand deals. The only acceptable trade-off for raising the debt limit is for the president and Democrats to accept the 'cut, cap and balance' plan. Period. The sooner our leadership says that -- and really sticks to it -- the sooner we can move beyond the petty politics of this crucial debate."

Obama cannot go around threatening to take away social security that I have worked for ever since I was 16 years old and I am now 66. I thought this was a country of "The People, By the People, and For the People". He is acting like a dictator. Why can't congress veto his threat. That is not his money and that is not the government's money to do with as they please. He is such a bad president and now he is a dictator. Congress needs to veto his threat and do it NOW! Tell him to quit sending money to other countries, quit spending millions on stupid experiments like researching the worm for who knows what. Tell him to cut the salaries of himself and all other government employees before he takes social security away from us. What does he care? He will get his retirement from the Governfment. There will be an uprising like never before seen in this country. He is playing with people's lives in the USA. Part of the problem is taking jobs away from the people in the USA and giving those jobs to India, China, Japan and other countries, while opening the borders and giving aliens the money we earned. Do you want to see this country go down? Our forfathers are rolling over in their graves. THINK ABOUT PUTTING A CAP ON OIL PRICES...THE PEOPLE ARE CHOKING! PLEASE STOP THIS CRAZY MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE FROM KILLING THE ELDERLY..MY MOM FOR ONE LIVES ON SOCIAL SECURITY ALONE. NO OTHER SOURCE OF INCOME. MEDICARE AND SOCIAL SECURITY CANNOT BE TAKEN AWAY FROM US. WE EARNED EVERY PENNY OF IT. IF THEY TAKE IT AWAY, THEY WILL HAVE TO WRITE US A REIMBURSEMENT CHECK FOR EVERY PENNY WE PUT IN OUR ENTIRE LIVES. WE LIVE IN A DEMOCRACY HERE WHERE THE PEOPLE MAKE THOSE DECISIONS, NOT THE WHIM OF A PRESIDENT WHO SHOULD BE IMPEACHED......PLEASE REPLY SOON. I JUST RECEIVED MY FIRST SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK "YESTERDAY" AND I AM STILL WORKING. Pat Barbara

So, you want the US government to pay out insurance money when there is no money? I know if my insurance (provider) runs out of money, it is going out of business. I am 52 years old with a mother who is 74. I supplement her income. She lives in a house for which I am paying the mortgage, in addition to my family's home. I pay her utilites, with the exception of her phone bill. I realize that I am not of the generations that had so much faith in a socialist platform such as social security insurance but understand that my mother feels she was promised something for the little bit that she contributed with her unequal pay jobs and all. I think the government should live up to your generation's perceived benefits . . . with one caveat - pay you what you paid in! After your account is empty, then you are on your own. Now that's the American way, democracy at its purest form. You get what you put in or you take the risk and take your money out in a lump sum and invest it. Of course that makes too much sense to those who want to blame another source for their misunderstanding of how the government works. Now you know Congress is not going reduce any salaries when they get automatic increases without even having to vote for it. I am so tired of working 3 jobs to support my family and my mother . . . but it has to be done. I don't ever plan to retire and it sounds like you shouldn't either. And another thing, how can congress veto a threat? Does congress have veto power? Your argument is wrong on so many levels. However, I hope you feel better for having expressed it. You need to suck it up, quit whinning, and pull yourself up by your bootstraps! And just for fair disclosure, I grew up on a farm. I started working at 5 and replaced a grown man for summer tobacco harvesting work when I was 7. Hard work and unexpected turns of events are not foreign to me. I am happy to be an American and believe this is the best country in the history of the world, even though I will probably die working.
