Adam Putnam Digs into Giant African Land Snail Infestation
Possibly my favorite Twitter posting of the day: Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam tweeted that he was Getting a firsthand look at the giant African land snail infestation in Miami.
The tweet linked to Putnam's Facebook page, where a series of photos were posted of his visit Friday to Coral Gables to witness firsthand the infestation.
Maybe Ive seen too many SyFy Channel movies where Mega Pythons or Gatoroid invade South Florida. But my first thought of giant African land snail infestation was not one of concern.
Still, according to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services website, Scientists consider the giant African land snail to be one of the most damaging snails in the world because it is known to consume at least 500 different types of plants, and can pose a serious health risk to humans. These snails could be devastating to Florida agriculture and natural areas because they cause extensive damage to tropical and subtropical environments.
