Attorney License Suspended for Ex Alcee Hastings Aide
Among the nine attorneys to have their legal license suspended last month by the Florida Supreme Court was Mikel David Jones, a former aide to U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar.
“Mikel David Jones, 4781 N. Congress Ave., Boynton Beach, suspended until further order, effective 30 days from an April 16 court order. (Admitted to practice: 1999.) Jones was found guilty in federal court of conspiracy, wire fraud, mail fraud and money laundering -- all felonies (case No. SC12-698) -- the announcement from The Florida Bar stated last week.
In November, Jones and his wife were found guilty by a federal jury of scheming to defraud a New York venture capital fund of approximately $350,000 that had helped finance Jones’ private law firm in Philadelphia.
After the conviction, Hastings issued a statement declaring that Jones was no longer employed by his congressional office. Jones had been with Hastings for 15 years.
Hastings had suspended Jones in May after the federal charges were filed.
