Barack Obama's White House Pays Women 18 Percent Less Than Men

Amid the Republicans' alleged "war on women," female employees in the Obama White House earn considerably less than their male colleagues, records show.

According to the 2011 report compiled by the White House, female employees earned a median annual salary of $60,000, which was about 18 percent less than the median salary for male employees ($71,000).

Calculating the median salary for each gender required some assumptions to be made based on the employee names. When unclear, every effort was taken to determine the appropriate gender, the Washington Free Beacon reported.

Back in July 2010, President Obama declared, “Paycheck discrimination hurts families who lose out on badly needed income. And with so many families depending on women’s wages, it hurts the American economy as a whole.”

On Wednesday, the Obama campaign lashed out at presumptive GOP nominee Mitt Romney for his failure to immediately endorse the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, a 2009 law that made it easier to file discrimination lawsuits.

The White House had no immediate comment on its salary differentials, and did not divulge if any Ledbetter suits had been filed on behalf of administration employees.

If women were paid "72%" less than men, then women would be the preferred hire. EVERY company would be filled with women because they work cheaper. Thomas Sowell debunked this whole thing 20 yrs ago in one of his books.

The article NEVER claims that these pay differentials are for women working in the same positions as the men to whom they are being compared. Take an organization - Bain, for example - where men are the executive officers and the few women who are employed are in secretarial positions. OF COURSE, their average salaries will be low by comparison to the average salaries of the men. Is your suggestion that the White House door greeter should be paid the same as the President?

IF what the article says is actually based on facts (they can't even claim they know the genders of the people involved), then it's all the better reason to pass the LL Act.

Where was the conservative "worry about women in the White House" in 2008? Never heard a peep. Now, you folks REALLY know better than this, don't you? You DO realize you have to compare people doing the same job instead of just throwing them all into a pile and doing salary averages, right?

Kenric,
Do you actually investigate your stories or do you just parrot what you read in some other rag. Your lede is at best misleading and at its core a lie. Even a cursory glance at the publicly available spread sheet of White House staff salaries shows same pay for same job without regard to the sex of the staffer. What an embarrasment to journalism you are.
