Christian Family Coalition Backs Pro-Prayer, Anti-Abortion Bills
The Christian Family Coalition says it will support two bills to allow school prayer and restrict abortion.
"Currently, children of faith in Florida are not allowed to express their beliefs in school during noncompulsory events," said CFC Chairman Anthony Verdugo. "At a time where all forms of public expression are tolerated and even celebrated, religious speech should be no exception."
Verdugo praised state Sen. Gary Siplin, D-Orlando, and Rep. Charles Van Zant, R-Palatka, for sponsoring Senate Bill 98 and House Bill 317, respectively, "to restore religious equality in our schools."
On abortion, CFC is supporting SB 290 and HB 277, which would prohibit abortion in the third trimester in locations other than a hospital and bar physicians from knowingly performing partial-birth abortions.
The measures also stipulate that infants born alive after attempted abortion are entitled to the same rights as other infants.
SB 290 is sponsored by Sen. Anitere Flores, R-Miami, and HB 277 is sponsored by Rep. Rachel Burgin, R-Riverview.
Verdugo said the measures implement "common-sense safeguards to protect women from the heinous procedure known as partial-birth abortion and newborn children who survive an attempted abortion."
Additionally, Verdugo said the bills "increase the quality care standards that should be maintained in abortion clinics for the benefit of women and children who should not be expolited at this particularly vulnerable time in their lives."
