Party On! Democratic Lawmaker Goes to Pot With Marijuana Bill
Consigning his party further to the margins, Democratic state Rep. Jeff Clemens wants to stash medical marijuana in the Florida Constitution.
In an effort to make his proposed amendment more palatable to voters, the Lake Worth lawmaker wouldn't require health insurers to reimburse pot-puffing patients, and would bar use from "public view."
Proponents cite a recent Florida poll purporting to show that slightly more than half the respondents favor medical marijuana. Whatever.
With a supermajority of Republican lawmakers more appropriately focused on the economy, Clemens' legalization gambit will likely go up in smoke.

Party? You should have been at the hospital with me for 9 months in 2010-it was not a party-it was legalized euthanasia thanks to the pharmaceutical companies. The amount of Oxycontin he was prescribed had a street value of at least $300-$500 a day and in the end was his cause of death. The only party I had was his funeral. Lets wrap our heads around this. We can continue to be held hostage by pain pills-both at a personal level with the addicts it creates and a state wide level with the crime it is causing or we can change our minds. This is not a joke, this is not Woodstock, this is medicine being kept from patients who need it.

It seems as newspaper is not endorsing the cannabis but all it's readers are! When the youth comes out and votes this will pass. Why are youdo scared of a natural plant that is caused 0 deaths. It's impossible to overdose on marijuana. Yet floridans overdose on pills everyday. We are not going to put up with this papers yellow journalism.

There are traditionalists and there are progressives on both sides of the isle.
Mr. Clemens' decision to support, what can only be termed, a progressive solution to the myriad problems with Florida's economy, healthcare policies and jail overcrowding.
There is good reason to support cannabis reform, when prescription med costs continue to skyrocket, employment continues to hover at an all time low, while at the same time, we witness 14 other states openly enact positive changes for the decriminalization of cannabis for medical use.
The State of Florida seems fearful to consider following the model provided by those Progressive solution finders in California, because we host the Disney Company and other. They fear that Florida will be seen as a place for adult partying, instead of the children's paradise image that has brought tourism to the central Florida area.
I believe that medical cannabis is the key to putting Florida's economy back in order, providing "Home Grown Employment".

I'd also like to add a BIG revelation, this would be good for the whole world. As Florida has various hubs virtually known as MeccaValuability, meaning rich in deep spirituality. The whole GOOD over BAD thing, will create waves of positive energy to link over to other zones like a gateway effect.

I am trying to understand this. You purport to support Florida leaders who are working to improve our lives (from the "about us" section of this website) yet you denigrate a politician who simply is attempting to help Florida's economy & its people. It seems to me that Sunshine State News and Rep. Clemens share the same desires.

While you make light of Rep. Jeff Clemens filing the resolution let us know there is a 60 day window for filing of legislation. Mr Clemens is definitely focusing on the economy with the introduction of this new medical industry in the state of Florida.

Civil liberties aside, the issue of cannabis prohibition is largely a fiscal and public safety issue. By that, I mean the state and feds are using considerable resources (ie. your tax dollars) to interfere with the lives of people who aren't posing a harm to others. Every time you imprison someone over marijuana, you take up one more jail cell that would hold someone that poses an ACTUAL threat to society. The only options from there are to A. Release some of the inmates, or B. Build more prisons (more $$$).

Marijuana is the safest drug with actual benefits for the user as opposed to alcohol which is dangerous, causes addiction, birth defects, and affects literally every organ in the body. Groups are organizing all over the country to speak their minds on reforming pot laws. let me get this straight: The government shouldnt require us to buy health insurance but it should ban us from using a drug that our doctor prescribed?

Mass marches seem to get Government attention a lot better than when We The People send email, make phone calls or even make appointments to meet with our elected public servants. Protest marches seem to say “hey, we’re serious about this” in the most effective way. A wise man told me long ago to: “do what works”. If we do it right, peaceful demonstrations can be a lot of fun too. So, what do you think? Will “boots on the ground” from the Constitutionally supported opposition to the “war on drugs”, (which is really a violent vicious illegal war against nonviolent citizens and a war on everyone’s Constitutional rights and freedom) end this violent unconstitutional war once and for all? Anyone interested in taking strong peaceful patriotic action and keeping it up until we win? I’m sure the news media will cover these events if we get enough people to show up.
How Governor Scott responds to our call for Constitutional Government will certainly expose his position on Constitutional Government. Whether or not you’re willing to participate will certainly define your patriotic values too. So, are you going to do something or just stand there and bleed? Are you a patriot or are you a slave, willing to conform to any legislation written, regardless of its Constitutionality?
This is not just about the right to use a safe effectve natural drug or even the right to grow and/or sell a natural God given plant. This is also about demanding to be governed by the text of the supreme law of the land rather than continuing to be ruled over by unconstitutional tyrants doing the bidding of crooked corporations.

Good going Rep. Clemens... Good idea to allow insurance companies to opt from covering it like they can for other "drugs"- and to bar use from public view. (Just like I don't want to drink someone elses prescription drugs, I don't want to inhale them either.)
