Drone Crashes, Shuts Down Florida Highway
A U.S. military drone plane crashed and exploded Wednesday morning at Tyndall Air Force Base, located about 12 miles east of Panama City. The QF-4 drone plane crashed on the drone runway while taking off, forcing base officials to shut down US 98 through the base. The highway is expected to remain closed for 24 hours.
No one was injured in the crash. Last week, another QF-4 drone exploded over the Gulf of Mexico near Port St. Joe.
Officials said they are not certain if the self-destruct charge on the unmanned aircraft detonated or not during the crash. The road closure is a precautionary measure.
The drone is modified from the F-4 Phantom and "provides a realistic full-scale target for air-to-air weapons system evaluation, development and testing" according to the Air Force.
