Federal Court Rules Against Highway Crosses Honoring Fallen Police Officers

On Wednesday, the 10th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals found the setting up of large crosses along roads in memory of Utah state troopers killed in the line of duty to be unconstitutional, maintaining that it violated the Establishment Clause.

The Utah Highway Patrol Association, a private organization, started setting the crosses up in 1998. On each cross is the fallen officer’s name and rank and the Utah Highway Patrol insignia -- which the judges opined would lead to concerns about the state government promoting Christianity.  Here we are 12 years later and American Atheists, an organization of more than 2,000 Americans looking to promote the separation of church and state, is still pursuing its lawsuit -- apparently successfully.

Could this happen in Florida? Stay tuned.

The Utah Highway Patrol Association, incidentally, has the option of appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Last I checked we lived in America. People have the right to practice their religion. The American Atheists have the right to their religion, but not the right to disrespect the fallen officers and their families, friends and the rest of us who did not even know these officers. These officers gave their lives to protect the rest of us. The Muslims want to build a Mosque in New York city, and again I believe we all have the right to our religious beliefs but let's be respectful of others. The Mosque should be no where near ground zero. As much as I do not like people pushing their religious beliefs on me, I respect that we all have the right to our individual beliefs. The American Atheists should not push their beliefs to the point that the crosses are taken down. These officers should be allowed to rest in peace, the symbol of the cross means something to them and their family and it should stay. If any of these atheists were officers, and died we could honor them in death by leaving some type of marker if they so wish. I respect our officers, and their families and I am highly offended by this group that think they have the right to demand the crosses be removed. If they believed in anything after this life they may realize that they should treat others with respect, it may get rather warm where they are going. Where is common courtesy, respect????? Shame on them for not giving a damn! Hope they never need help from any officer. I truly hope the judges come to their senses!

I don't understand why judges are judging about this. It's undermining our country. We are a religious country. God is a part of our lives. "In God we trust" is part of our national fabric. Judges need to focus on other things like fighting corruption and returning morality to America. God bless our armed forces home and abroad.
