Florida Conservatives Target 'Pretty Little Liars' for Lesbian Content

The Florida Family Association (FFA), a conservative organization led by David Caton, is taking aim at another television show’s advertisers. The FFA is targeting “Pretty Little Liars” on the ABC Family Channel and encouraging its members and supporters to write to sponsors, encouraging them to pull their support.

“McDonald's and Chrysler are leading advertisers on [the] lesbian TV show watched mostly by girls under 18,” noted the FFA on Tuesday. “Unlike any other show on unrestricted advertiser-supported television networks, the majority of the primary cast on 'Pretty Little Liars' are lesbians. The series has grown from one lesbian lead character to three.

“The majority of the viewers of 'Pretty Little Liars' lesbian show are children. More than half or 1.3 million of the 2.5 million female viewers are children -- girls between the ages of 12 and 18 according to cable reports on Deadline.com. This report does not include girls younger than 12, but certainly they are also watching by the tens of thousands,” continued the FFA. “ABC using salacious and glamorizing scenes portraying young, pretty women as lesbians sends the wrong message to these young girls, a message that reinforces and legitimizes this homosexual lifestyle in a manner that could affect these young girls’ sexual identity for a lifetime.”

WTF? FFA fails basic math.

And everyone, the press, LGBT community, EVERYONE agrees that PLL portrays its gay characters wonderfully. And I must agree: they manage the nuances perfectly. They can sexualize their lesbian characters w/o objectifying them, usually the lesbian or bi character is just there to be whored around and have something controversial to put into the trailer. I haven's seen PLL play that card once.

All I'm seeing here is a bunch of prudes desperately in need of a productive hobby, clinging to the handbrake to stop what is inevitably coming: the next generation is outgrowing the old one's prejudices.

I find it absolutely horrid how this show gets flack for promoting tolerance and displaying female empowerment but absolutely no attention is given to the horrors of being stalked or having a pedophile creep around and film young girls in private. Obviously the latter are more socially acceptable.

I love all your comments, guys. You're all seriously hilarious. :)

Anyways, getting to the message of the CONSERVATIVE Florida party or whatever... yes it seems that the show has jumped from 1 bisexual girl to 4 bisexual girls, like the user "ph" said... these girls aren't just "pretty lesbian girls being whored around the town of Rosewood"... these are pretty lesbian girls who are just living lives normally and innocently dating other girls like any fricken normal teenager would.

I can kind of understand where the Conservatives are coming from..they're basically asking: Why are pretty young women constantly a representation of being gay in this show? And if you think about it..a majority of Emily's females encounters have been beautiful femme girls, but as individuals they were so different. And this conservative party needs to understand that the lesbian communities have all types of girls... feminine and butch. In the show's and book's defense, Emily Fields was always drawn to the girly girls. So yes these 12 year olds may witness that every Tuesday night, but guess what? It's in the books. So it has to translate to the show somehow.

Another comment the conservatives made was "this pretty little liar's lesbian show" and it actually annoyed me. Why would you even put a label on a show like that? Joey from FRIENDS dated hundreds of chicks, so omg, should I call it "That FRIENDS straight show" ? Emily needs a fair romance story line, just like the other 3 girls. Aria, Hanna, and Spencer have had their share of men so it's only necessary to give Emily her share of females! Alrightyy...I'm totally done ranting. Sorry guys!

Unless my math skills suck, 1 of 4 is 25%, not a majority. And let's just throw in the fact that the character of Emily Fields might actually help teens who are struggling with their sexual identities... That's when most of the questioning starts popping up. So over blatant hate, here.

I didn't realize 1 character out of 4 was the majority.
