Florida Democrats Fire Away at Quran-Burning Event

Following the lead of the Obama administration and Rep. Dwight Bullard of Miami, Florida Democrats commented on the event being led by Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center in Gainesville to burn Qurans to commemorate the ninth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

"I stand with General Petraeus in condemning the planned burning of the Quran, as it could put our brave troops in harm's way,” said state CFO Alex Sink, the Democratic gubernatorial candidate, agreeing with her Republican rival Rick Scott. “I also feel this display of hatred and intolerance is not in keeping with the values and spirit of our state."

“The Dove church in Gainesville could not be more wrong and they should reconsider their patently offensive Quran-burning,” said Sen. Dan Gelber of Miami Beach, the Democratic candidate for attorney general. “The demonstration will only inflame the very elements they seek to embarrass and as General Petraeus has pointed out, this action will endanger our troops who already put their lives in harm's way and will only further threaten American security. This type of behavior is simply not consistent with bedrock American traditions and principles. The famous words of Pastor Martin Niemoller are instructive when he admonished against silence in the face of wrongdoing. It is particularly important for Americans to speak out to let the world community know that this small group does not represent, in any manner, the beliefs of the rest of our state or our nation. I urge every officeholder and candidate in Florida to similarly condemn this behavior; and I urge righteous men and women of faith – no matter their religious convictions – to similarly admonish against this conduct from their churches and synagogues.”

It is sad to hear that The Dove World Outreach Center is reaching out to the world and commemorating the death of innocent people by expressing such hatred. If the belief is that "God is Love and Truth" then how are these qualities expressed by burning the quran or any other book for that matter?

Usually, love is shown by compassion and commitment to qualities that would bring about love. Also, as there are a multiplicity of truth(s), how do we move towards the dialogue and teaching a better understanding of the diversity of truth(s) that exist in our rich society?

Should the focus be based on promoting or making statements that are negative, or foster love and engagement of truth that has allowed our people and nation to progress. I think it is against our values to burn the quran, I would condemn it if I had the responsibility of leading people and believers to righteousness and love for God.

There is much to say in opposition of burning any holy books; I do hope that Pastor Terry Jones and their community reflect on the values of their faith and not act against them, it is better to act with love and wisdom in response to acts of ignorance and terror committed by small groups rather than similar ignorant acts.

I hope and pray that the victims of 9/11 are resting in peace, pray for their families for their pain and sorrow is ushered with love and compassion, and our nation and the world remembers these acts and prays for peace and wisdom to move forward together.

Sincerely,

A Muslim

Back down because muslims are a bunch of fools who don't care about humanity.
If they burned the Bible they would have nothing to fear from Christians but if you burn their book you are stepping on the toes of a bunch of heathens who will retaliate anyway they can.

No one here seems to remember "P""s Christ," a plastic crucifix submerged in urine. It won a prize worth $15,000--part of which was paid by the National Endowment of the Arts.

At that time, all the Liberals were appalled that Christians would be offended by such a "great artwork," and slandered any criticism of it as "censorship."

I don't remember any Democrats speaking up against "P**s Christ," or the "artist" who created it.

Now we have a guy who wants to burn some the Quran , and all the Liberals are going crazy and doing everything they can to censor him.

To all my liberal friends--just think of the Quran burning as transgressive performance art.
