Homeland Security Chief Napolitano to Resign
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is planning to resign as early as Friday, according to an administration official. Napolitano is the first person to serve as United States secretary of Homeland Security, and has been in the position since 2009.President Barack Obama nominated Napolitano for the position in 2008.
Napolitano is planning on taking a job within the university system in California. She attended Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, Calif.
"For more than four years I have had the privilege of serving President Obama and his administration as the secretary of Homeland Security," she said in a statement. "The opportunity to work with the dedicated men and women of the Department of Homeland Security, who serve on the front lines of our nation's efforts to protect our communities and families from harm, has been the highlight of my professional career. We have worked together to minimize threats of all kinds to the American public."
