John Mica to Highlight Transport Bill During Port Canaveral Tour Today

U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman John Mica will visit Port Canaveral on Monday to highlight major transportation legislation being considered in the House of Representatives this week.

“This week I am proposing to reform the current practice of the federal government denying our ports the full revenues being contributed to the Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund,” said Mica, R-Orlando.
The veteran congressman said his American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act provides long-term funding and critical program reforms for the improvement of the nation’s roads and bridges.

Additionally, the measure proposes that all Harbor Maintenance Trust Fund revenues be invested for their intended purpose. The trust fund is based upon a user fee collected from shippers that utilize the nation’s coastal ports, but the government only invests a portion of these user fees back into harbor maintenance.

By the end of fiscal year 2012, the trust fund could show a balance of nearly $7 billion.

Port Canaveral officials will accompany Mica as he reviews port facilities and expansion plans there.
