No Performance Pay Resurrection by Thrasher This Session

Sen. John Thrasher, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida, told Sunshine State News on Friday morning that he does not intend to resurrect his teacher performance pay bill this session.

"Right now, we've got two weeks left, and I've got a budget to do," Thrasher said only moments before the Senate legislative session convened.

Thrasher also declined to say whether the proposal would fare better under a new governor next year.

Gov. Charlie Crist vetoed Thrasher's proposal to tie teacher pay to student performance on assessments Thursday.

Crist might have gotte teachers unions what they wanted, but he's losing what he had. Members of the Republican party have denounced the decision and withdrawn their  support of Crist's U.S. Senate campaign

Last night, incoming House Speaker Dean Cannon, R-Winter Park, renounced his endorsement of Crist. So did Rep. John Tobia, R-Melbourne. In addition, the governor's long-time mentor, former U.S. Sen. Connie Mack, left Crist's U.S. Senate campaign after the decision.
