Oral Arguments in Prison Privatization Appeal Rescheduled

A new date has been set for the oral arguments in the state’s appeal of Circuit Judge Jackie Fulford’s ruling that the Legislature violated the state Constitution by placing prison privatization in the 2011-2012 state budget.

Due to a prior engagement on the part of the state’s general counsel, Jon Glogau, the arguments have been moved from June 13 to June 27.

The state contends Fulford was wrong to rule that the Legislature in 2011 exceeded its authority by including a proviso in the state budget that required the Department of Corrections to accept bids from companies seeking to privatize state prisons. The proviso would have allowed 29 Central and South Florida prisons to be changed from public to private if the contracts saved at least 7 percent from current prison costs.

Fulford didn’t object to the state privatizing prisons, just how the legislation was enacted.

In February, 10 Senate Republicans broke ranks to help Democrats defeat a stand-alone bill to advance the plan to privatize the correctional facilities.

Another far right disaster - the privatize everything movement, brought to you by out of state think tanks like the so-called "Reason Foundation". At least there were 10 Republicans who have realized the disasters these types of Governor-adviser groups are bringing to Florida.

The Reason Foundation also "reasoned" that Florida's economy needed to stay depressed and were instrumental in us losing billions of dollars (and thousands of jobs) in federal high speed rail money that now has gone to other states' recoveries.

And they're not done privatizing - no more public hospitals, new toll roads everywhere, and if they had their way - market-based universities, and no public K-12 schools at all (except maybe for the poor).

Is that the future Floridians want, or only the one that non-Floridian think tanks believe needs to be impressed on the backward state of Florida.

Public money for private interests - that the far right's new mantra. Follow the money and see who is getting enriched - is it the Governor's trusts held by his wife (e.g. prison medical), Senator J.D. Alexander (Alico development holdings), big oil (don't want to cut down on sprawl and car gasoline use from high-speed rail or other mass transit), or someone else with private school interests?

After all, it's only YOUR money.
