Sanford Names Richard Myers as New Interim Police Chief
Richard Myers, the former chief of police in Colorado Springs, Colo., has been named the interim police chief in Sanford, now at the heart of a shooting that is getting international attention.
City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. announced Myers, who also served as a police chief in Appleton, Wis., Detroit and Chicago.
Police Chief Bill Lee has been on leave since stepping aside March 22 after the majority of the Sanford City Commission expressed “no confidence" over his handling of the Feb. 26 shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman, 28.
Lee submitted a resignation, but the offer was rejected by the commission.
Zimmerman, who has been charged with second-degree murder, has filed a not guilty plea. He contends he acted in self-defense under the state’s Stand Your Ground law.
