Tom Rooney and Alcee Hastings Introduce Legislation to Establish National Nonprofit Day
Reps. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., and Tom Rooney, R-Fla., introduced legislation Thursday to recognize the importance of nonprofit organizations, designating May 16, 2014 as "National Nonprofit Day."
Nonprofit organizations advocate for solutions to some of the great challenges facing our nation and the world, said Hastings. Nonprofits contribute to advancements in science, research, and health care. They work to improve education, support civil and human rights, and to protect environmental resources and wildlife. The men and women who advocate tirelessly for the causes they believe in deserve to be recognized for their valuable contributions to society.
Fifteen other congressmen joined Hastings and Rooney as co-sponsors of the legislation, including some from Florida. Reps. Vern Buchanan, R-Fla., Ted Deutch, D-Fla., and Frederica Wilson, D-Fla., all added their name to the list of co-sponsors.
Our nations nonprofits provide critical services in communities across the country, while employing millions of Americans. Establishing a National Nonprofit Day will help recognize the great work that our nonprofits are already doing and encourage more Americans to give back to their communities, said Rep. Rooney.
