U.N. Marks Hitler's Birthday by Devoting Wednesday to 'Mother Earth'

U.N. diplomats will devote their workday Wednesday to debating the rights of “Mother Earth.”

A bloc of mostly socialist governments seeks a U.N. treaty that would grant the same rights found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to Mother Nature.

Bolivian President Evo Morales has led the crusade, establishing a Ministry of Mother Earth to act as an ombudsman in his country.

Urging the United Nations to follow Bolivia's example, Morales says the first step is to “eradicate capitalism” and to force wealthy industrialized countries to “pay their environmental debt.”

Communism? Fascism? Environmentalism?

The United Nations in Orbit

Ambassadors from round the globe
Will don a diplomatic robe,
And to the great Assembly Hall
Today will make a service call
To raise their voices in debate
On Mother Earth’s eternal fate.

The plan calls for the world to sign
A treaty that will make divine
Our Pachamama (Mother Earth –
For those who suffer from a dearth
Of education on the gods
Of Andes and enviro-squads).

The plan, as point of trivia,
Was hatched down in Bolivia,
Which hopes the world will soon be chained
To living standards they’ve attained
By granting equal rights in law
To She who orbits sun god Ra.

When once these rights are well enshrined
All Western countries will be fined
At twice their yearly GDP
If they should harvest from the sea,
Or drill for oil, build a dam
Or have been known as Uncle Sam.

And when the world economy
Is left in tatters and debris,
Our friends who hearken from La Paz
Will cheer the triumph of their cause;
And having made the whole world poor,
They’ll star in films by Michael Moore.

Very cute, but keep in mind that there is no good economy without plentiful resources and working eco-systems. Not to mention no way to enjoy what you earn if you're sick from drinking polluted water, eating poisoned nutritionless food, or breathing toxic/dirty air. :-)

BTW, I hope you're just noting a coincidence between Hitler's birthday and the U.N. devoting Wednesday to Mother Earth and not suggesting some nefarious link... :-)

Debating the "rights" of Mother Earth/Nature isn't a bad idea but Morales is wrong to think we have to eradicate capitalism in order to do it or coexist. Otherwise, I have no idea what he could mean by forcing wealthy countries to pay their environmental debt.
