Vern Buchanan: Bipartisan Effort Needed to Build Florida’s Seaports
U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, who will co-host the Florida congressional delegations review of the Florida ports on Feb. 14, is calling for unity from the 27 members of the delegation on improving the seaports.
Expanding our exports and in turn creating new jobs is an issue where Republicans and Democrats can work together and find common ground, Buchanan stated in a release.
Buchanan and U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, will host a delegation meeting at the Cannon House Office Building in Washington, D.C. Port directors from throughout Florida have been invited to address the delegation.
Floridas 15 public seaports support 550,000 jobs and produce $66 billion in annual economic activity to the region, Buchanan stated. Our own Port Manatee -- the closest deepwater seaport to the Panama Canal -- generates more than 24,000 jobs.
