Video: Nurse Practitioners Assail FMA and Legislature
Sorry, you need to install flash to see this content.
In the above video, a nurse practitioner, nicely accompanied by the Downton Abbey soundtrack, displays a set of cards detailing how the Florida Medical Association blocked legislation that would allow the state's nurse practitioners to work at "full scope," and notes that under the FMA's monopoly, Florida became an "epicenter" of pill mill abuse.
Despite a string of state and national studies supporting the nurse practitioners' cause, the Legislature has repeatedly rejected reform. The NP video is one more indication that the battle will be joined again in 2013.

When children are irresponsible with a privilege they have been given, restrictions are imposed. Maybe it's time restrictions are imposed on MD's that have been reckless with their prescribing authority. NP's with the right to prescribe narcotics in other states have not exhibited unsafe prescribing practices. Limitatitions should be imposed on those that deserve them. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure that patients have safe access to quality care; this is not equal to access to any medication they want. -NP Student

As an NP one of the reasons left Florida was the restrictions there, and at that time the legislature was trying to pass laws that would pretty much put the NP out of business. In 2014 when the minimum requirement to be an NP is a doctorate degree, what will the excuse be?

So, the best way to get a hold on the pill mill crisis is to allow 12,000 more people in the state to prescribe narcotics??? Makes sense....
