Florida Congressmen: Stop the Global Dog Meat, Cat Meat Trade

June 23, 2017 - 10:00am

On Thursday, two members of the Florida congressional delegation teamed up to offer a proposal calling for an end to global dog meat and cat meat trade.

Republican U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan and Democrat U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings brought out a resolution “calling on China, South Korea, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Indonesia, Cambodia, Laos, India and all nations to end their dog and cat meat trade and to enforce existing laws against the trade.”

This is not the first time the two congressmen tackled the issue. Back in March, Buchanan and Hastings unveiled the “Dog and Cat Meat Trade Prohibition Act," a proposal banning the slaughter of cats and dogs for human consumption.

Hastings made the case for the new resolution on Thursday

“Approximately 30,000,000 dogs and a large number of cats are killed for human consumption annually across the globe. This extreme display of animal cruelty is not only inhumane, but also a threat to public health for citizens and international visitors. The United States must demand that this horrific practice be stopped immediately,” said Hastings.

“I am proud to have introduced this bipartisan resolution urging all countries to end their dog and cat meat trade,” Hastings said. “The resolution affirms the United States’ commitment to the protection of animals and advances the animal protection movement rapidly growing around the world. I want to commend the thousands of supporters and animal welfare groups, who continue to work tirelessly to end the global dog and cat meat trade once and for all.  While we still face many challenges, we must remain vigilant in this fight together and make our voices heard.”

“Dogs and cats provide companionship to millions and should not be slaughtered and sold as food,” Buchanan said. “It’s time to provide important protections for our most popular pets.”

The Animal Hope & Wellness Foundation, Animal Welfare Institute, Hounds and Heroes, Humane Society International, Humane Society Legislative Fund, The Humane Society of the United States and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) are all behind the resolution.

The issue is not a new one for either of the two congressmen from the Sunshine State who are the co-chairs of the Florida delegation. Hastings has been leading the charge on Capitol Hill in condemning the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China where 10,000 dogs are slaughtered each year for human consumption.

Buchanan has also garnered national attention for his work on animal issues. The Humane Society of the United States named Buchanan as its legislator of the year last April, the first time a member of the Florida delegation has received the honor. Buchanan received a 100 score from the Humane Society and fought for some of the group’s top priorities. In 2016, Buchanan brought out the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act which bans exporting horses to Mexican slaughterhouses. Buchanan has also led the charge on Capitol Hill to stop domestic slaughterhouses from creating horse meat for human consumption. The Bradenton congressman has also been active in trying to keep manatees covered under the Endangered Species Act. Last year, Buchanan protested the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to downgrade manatees from “endangered” to “threatened.”

It's about the barbaric torture of these dogs, and cats. It is about the enjoyment of seeing them suffer. Their belief is the more pain, and suffering the better. Not to mention that many of these cats, and dogs are stolen family pets. No human being has the right to cause so much suffering, pain, and cruelty to an innocent sentient being. This is cruelty beyond comprehension. These dogs, and cats have no voice, they cannot fight this evil. We are their voices. If humanity is to survive, if society is to thrive these types of archaic behaviors must stop completely.

I love cats, just can't eat a whole one!

WTF, youre joking right?

You think it is a joke that as many as 30 million dogs and cats are sadistically tortured and slaughtered each year in Asia as countries as China, South Korea, Cambodia, Indonesia and Vietnam? Many of the cats and dogs are stolen pets who are transported hundreds to thousands of miles, in cages so small they can hardly breathe, given no food or water during the trip to the slaughterhouses. Many don’t survive the trip. I believe they are the lucky ones! When they are ready for slaughter they are tortured in the most barbaric, sadistic fashion, often in front of other dogs and cats awaiting a similar fate. They are dismembered; boiled, skinned, blow torched all while conscious! They believe that the more the animal suffers the greater the benefit to their virility or to regulate their body temperature. Obviously there is no scientific evidence to support these misguided beliefs. In fact eating dog meat has been connected to outbreaks of rabies and cholera. ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

This one

Why aren't both of these bozos working together on tax reform, the United States budget or the United States deficit - something that pertains to AMERICANS instead of trying to stick their nose into the business of other nations?

Because they have a Heart!

Don't these two corrupt morons (Buchanan voted "One of the 12 most corrupt politicians of 2012 by "Judicial Watch"; and Hastings impeached as a Federal Judge for soliciting bribes and accused of sexual harassment of a staff member before he even ran for Congress) have anything better to do??? Where were they when the Federal Government was shipping hundreds of thousands of Wild Mustangs from our Western lands to European butchers???

Thank you from France, thank you for your fight!

Thank you for doing the right thing, these horrific acts of cruelty against dogs and cats have to stop now! We need to hear voice like your own that can make these changes. Thank you!

Thank you for speaking out about the dog and cat meat trade. The animals suffer terrible, prolonged torture before they are killed. No living being should suffer like that. Please continue being a voice for the voiceless. Thank you.

As always, Jill, your comment goes straight to the heart of these barbaric trades! I totally agree that "no living being should suffer ..", for we've witnessed and read about the torture inflicted on these helpless animals. Thx, Jill ... I'm so pleased that you're my friend. I know that together, with so many other friends, we will fight to the very end to stop these trades until ALL of the dogs & cats in Asia & beyond are living free! xx

I applaud both members for allowing our voices to be heard on behalf of the voiceless that have suffered enough at the hands of these people who wish to hold on to myths . We know very well the purpose of dogs and cats on earth and it's not on the dinner plate!

Dear leaders The cruelty inflicted on innocent sentients is appalling , plain murder! They need protection , legislation to be enforced to protect all species! They are important in this world , part of life cycle - not HUMAN GREEDY /ABUSIVE BEINGS! Humanity are the problem in the world, not animals Yours sucrely
