With Republicans routing Democrats across the nation on Tuesday, the GOP won a veto-proof majority in the Florida House of Representatives as five incumbent Democrats went down to defeat. When the dust settled, Republicans controlled 81 of the 120 seats in the Florida House -- increasing their majority by five.

It will be incumbent vs. former incumbent as two candidates face off in the politically shifting sands of House District 81 where Rep. Adam Fetterman, D-Port St. Lucie, will defend his seat against Republican challenger Gayle Harrell in a post-term-limit showdown that will be one of the most watched in the state.

Having passed the first version of its budget last week, the Florida House met on Tuesday to tackle economic issues, including creating a sales tax holiday just in time for back-to-school shopping and forming an organization to invest in Florida’s ports.

The House created a three-day sales tax holiday running from Aug. 13 until Aug. 15. During that period, books, clothes, shoes and book bags under $50 and school supplies under $10 would be exempt from sales tax.

Legislation shifting the burden of proof from retailer to plaintiff in slip-and-fall cases overwhelmingly passed the House Thursday and took a step toward passage in the Senate.

Proponents of the legislation say their bills shift Florida’s law back to where it was before 2001. In that year, the Florida Supreme Court ruled in Owens vs. Publix that the burden of proof in such tort cases was on retailers. The next year, lawmakers adopted legislation that fell in line with the court's ruling.
