WASHINGTON -- Amid all the dark news from Afghanistan, every now and then a sliver of light slips through the cracks.

Afghanistan, it turns out, is rich in minerals. Trillions rich. It's going to become the Saudi Arabia of lithium, they say. Thanks to vast stores of that resource, plus iron, copper, cobalt and gold, this impoverished, war-torn nation could become a wealthy nation.

President Obama is being hailed for toughness in his firing of Gen. McChrystal and brilliance in his replacing him as Afghan field commander with Gen. David Petraeus, who managed the George W. Bush "surge" in Iraq that saved this nation from an ignominious defeat.

My family, like most families in America, has its share of veterans. My Uncle George served in the Army under General George Patton during World War II. Other uncles served in the Navy and Air Force during Vietnam. My father-in-law was a radio man in the Marines serving in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

Congress spent the week preparing for its more-than-month-long recess by finally passing the extension of the federal unemployment benefits. This $34 billion bill was passed in the Senate on Tuesday, just minutes after the newest senator from West Virginia was sworn in as the 100th United States senator for the 111th Congress.

WASHINGTON -- President Obama was fully justified in dismissing Gen. Stanley McChrystal. The firing offense did not rise to the level of insubordination -- this was no MacArthur undermining the commander in chief's war strategy -- but it was a serious enough show of disrespect for the president and for the entire civilian leadership to justify relief from his post.
