On Wednesday, the Democratic-controlled U.S. Senate rejected Republican efforts to push a measure repealing the federal health care law enacted in 2010 with the backing of President Barack Obama. The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed a repeal measure last week.

Associated Industries of Florida boasts the most powerful business lobby in the state and the Florida Chamber of Commerce claims the largest membership with 139,000 businesses in its group.

In an effort to make Florida recycle 75 percent of its solid waste by 2020, a state Senate committee voted Wednesday to require businesses with 25 employees or more to report their recycling rates biennially. 

The Senate Environmental Preservation and Conservation Committee unanimously passed SB 570, sponsored by Sen. Lee Constantine, R-Altamonte Springs, to get businesses on board with the state’s recycling goals.    

“We are woefully behind other states,” Constantine said. “And, we need to promote programs that implement 'Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.'”

Locked in a tight race for the Republican attorney general nomination, former Assistant State Attorney Pam Bondi and former Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Holly Benson won endorsements on Thursday and used the opportunity to pledge to continue Attorney General Bill McCollum’s lawsuit against new federal health-care laws backed by President Barack Obama. Kottkamp also picked up an endorsement and used it to stress his legal background.

Adam Putnam to serve as commissioner of agriculture and consumer services--but did not endorse any candidates for governor or attorney general.

A few weeks ago President Barrack Obama announced his plan for NASA and boy was it a shocker!

After promising -- twice -- during his campaign to preserve America’s space program, the president demonstrated an unfortunate lack of vision for the future of manned space flights. He proved his rhetoric was as hollow as his promises -- mere  attempts to woo the people of the Space Coast so that he could win their votes for his election.

After the Florida Legislature gets through this session, and does whatever it must to fill a $3 billion budget gap, what then?

Lawmakers may congratulate themselves on not raising taxes, but several big initiatives will be left undone or unrealized.
