The new Republican majority controlling the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure Wednesday evening that would repeal the federal health-care law backed by President Barack Obama in 2010. Joined by three Democrats, 242 Republicans voted for the repeal measure while 189 votes were cast against it.

Florida’s political leaders are continuing to pressure the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), hoping that more than half of the state will be declared as a disaster area due to the inclement weather.

While Gov. Rick Scott issued an order Monday for all flags at state buildings to fly at half-staff this week in remembrance of victims of the mass shooting in Arizona, members of Florida’s congressional delegation weighed in on the tragic events.

After stalling in the afternoon, the U.S. House voted just after midnight Friday to extend tax cuts initially backed by George W. Bush in 2001 and 2003 for all Americans. The bill, which also extends jobless benefits, now moves to President Barack Obama’s desk.

While there were some dramatic races in the Sunshine State, including some pivotal victories that helped Republicans take control of the U.S. House, most of the state’s congressional races were not particularly close.

With less than a week until the primary election, President Barack Obama showed U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek his strongest support to date for the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate election in November.
