The Florida Chamber of Commerce Political Institute and Cherry Communications released a poll over the weekend showing that health care executive Rick Scott has the lead in the Republican gubernatorial primary over Attorney General Bill McCollum, and that Gov. Charlie Crist’s independent campaign for the U.S. Senate remains ahead of Republican rival Marco Rubio.

President Barack Obama defended his administration’s efforts in response to the Gulf of Mexico oil spill during a visit to the Florida Panhandle Tuesday and said it will do whatever it takes as long it takes to put the region back to normal.

Obama also put in a plug for the region he saw this week, turning tourism pitchman to help out the businesses that have seen a drop off in visits.

Health care executive Rick Scott has hit the campaign trail. The Republican gubernatorial candidate, now leading in the polls over Attorney General Bill McCollum for the GOP nomination, campaigned through the Panhandle over the weekend, hit Bartow on Monday and will speak in Tallahassee on Thursday.

A mood swing swept Florida this week.

With the clock on the Gulf oil spill passing the 50-day mark, Florida officials jettisoned their measured response and began loudly airing frustration with British Petroleum and cleanup efforts, as tar balls, sheen, boom and skimmers became the vocabulary of a Sunshine State summer.

The ghost of Jim Greer is coming back to haunt Bill McCollum.

Until the Republican Party chairman resigned last January amid a storm of controversy over his financial dealings, McCollum was one of Greer's most steadfast supporters. Now the GOP gubernatorial candidate, with his campaign sinking in the polls, can't seem to run away from him fast enough.

Tax breaks for Gulf coast property owners could be part of the mix in a proposed special session sparked by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill which Gov. Charlie Crist is looking to call as early as next month.

Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink pushed Crist to embrace the tax reduction plan Tuesday as the governor and Cabinet heard presentations from BP along with state environmental, wildlife and revenue officials about the effects of the massive spill.

The people of Florida haven’t been so mad at a British guy since English General James Oglethorpe launched a barrage of cannonballs at the Castillo de San Marcos at St. Augustine in 1740.

Tony Hayward, the chairman of British Petroleum, is the current whipping boy, and the barrage is now going the other way and will continue this week as nearly every Florida politician running for office launches an attack on the company for the oil it has sent to the state’s money-making shoreline.

The plotline of Florida’s summer of oil got a little thicker last week.

Tar balls started making their way onto Pensacola Beach as sheen from the Deepwater Horizon rig neared the state’s Gulf coastline for the first time since the April 20 disaster. State leaders including Gov. Charlie Crist, Attorney General Bill McCollum and Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink all made detours to the Florida Panhandle – with political careers and the state’s tourist industry now at stake.

Adding more drama to an already colorful election, Lawton “Bud” Chiles III, son of a Florida political legend who served three terms in the U.S. Senate and two terms as governor, announced Thursday he was leaving the Democratic Party and launching a gubernatorial campaign with no party affiliation.

Bud Chiles, the son of Florida political legend and longtime U.S. Sen. and Gov. Lawton Chiles, is set to make announcement in Tallahassee on Thursday about his political future -- with rumors swirling that he intends to run for governor in the Democratic primary or, possibly, with no party affiliation.

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist, up until last month a Republican, will step into a bastion of Democratic politics this weekend with a speech to the AFL-CIO of Florida as the union umbrella group vets candidates for possible endorsement.

Crist will speak at the AFL-CIO's endorsing convention in Jacksonville on Friday, and union officials will make a decision in a closed-door meeting on Sunday on who will get the union's endorsement in several races, including the United States Senate contest in which Crist is now an unaffiliated candidate.

The Republican Party of Florida released credit card records Friday containing more than $7 million in charges racked up by 31 Republicans -- not all of them household names, not all of them even party leaders.

Nevertheless, the release of such records would have been virtually unnecessary had Gov. Charlie Crist not vetoed a bill that would have allowed more transparency in fundraising and expenditures. The bill would have created so-called party affiliation committees through which expenditure reports by both Republicans and Democrats would have been more detailed.

Faced with the potential loss of millions of dollars and Florida’s “sand-between your toes “reputation, Gov. Charlie Crist said Thursday he’d consider calling lawmakers back to put an offshore drilling ban into the Florida Constitution.

Several Democratic lawmakers and Democratic gubernatorial candidate and Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink called for the ban, saying the timing may be right to pass what even a few weeks ago was unthinkable, a ban on offshore drilling etched in constitutional stone.
