Never in our party's history have we witnessed a 65-plus point swing in a statewide campaign involving two well-known candidates. Kudos to him. Marco has risen to become a darling of Republicans nationwide and is the heavy favorite to become a U.S. senator before the age of 40.

The Legislature sent its first bill of the year to Gov. Rick Scott Wednesday, when the House joined the Senate in passing the hotly contested SB 736, a measure basing teacher pay on performance and assessments instead of seniority and tenure.

Flanked by legislative leaders at a press conference after the vote was taken, Scott praised the passage of the bill. “This will help attract and retain the best teachers,” said Scott, adding that it was part of his plan to increase jobs in the Sunshine State.

The federal government is touting progress made on the president’s goal to double national exports in the next five years, and a prominent Florida business advocate says that the state could be following suit if it makes the right choices.

“I think it’s certainly possible,” said Barney Bishop, president and CEO of major business advocacy organization Associated Industries of Florida. “Whether that can happen is going to depend on the economy of the world and the ability of Florida and the nation in general to remain competitive.”

Businesses hoping the state will continue to pay for certain damages sustained on projects contracted with state agencies might need to temper their expectations.

The Senate Policy Steering Committee on Ways and Means voted unanimously Thursday to absolve the state of paying certain early-termination and liquidated-damage fees on contracted projects, and cap state leases of personal property at $500,000.

The bill, which also passed its last committee unanimously, is now headed to the floor.

Locked in a tight race for the Republican attorney general nomination, former Assistant State Attorney Pam Bondi and former Agency for Health Care Administration Secretary Holly Benson won endorsements on Thursday and used the opportunity to pledge to continue Attorney General Bill McCollum’s lawsuit against new federal health-care laws backed by President Barack Obama.
