The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that will add one more space shuttle launch and fund the development of commercial and heavy-lift rockets, but it won’t save the jobs of more than 1,000 shuttle workers scheduled to be laid off Friday.

Labor unions, business leaders and government agencies are uniting to lobby President Barack Obama to change a proposed space budget that jettisons thousands of space industry jobs and grounds NASA’s return to the moon.

Obama is scheduled to visit Florida April 15 to discuss his controversial plan. And fearing he is not planning to bring good news, these strange bedfellows are preparing to pressure him to invest in Florida’s heavy-lift vehicles and set a specific deadline for NASA’s exploration of Mars.

Blaming "past decisions to end the Space Shuttle program," President Barack Obama followed through with his pledge to create a task force to bolster Florida's sagging Space Coast.

The White House's announcement was alternately welcomed and derided by the region's congressional delegation.

Pledging $40 million to "develop regional economic growth and job creation" on Florida's Space Coast, President Barack Obama on Thursday sought to soothe concerns about impending employment losses related to the phase-out of the shuttle program.

He didn't necessarily sway Florida officials.

Calling President Barack Obama's NASA budget "unacceptable," U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas joined Rep. Bill Posey in demanding a greater commitment for space exploration from the White House.

Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach, and Posey, R-Rockledge, spoke Friday at a congressional forum in Cocoa in advance of Obama's scheduled visit to Florida on Thursday.
