Gov. Rick Scott allowed SB 2A to pass into law Wednesday, pushing back the start of a program to inspect septic tanks by six months. Some lawmakers, however, want to go further than that -- perhaps as Scott was hoping -- and get rid of the program altogether.

With less than two weeks to go in the legislative session, the Florida House spent the better part of Wednesday debating national matters and passing memorials to Congress. 

The House passed a measure asking Congress to hold trials of captured terrorists and enemy combatants in military tribunals instead of in a civilian courtroom. The measure passed on an 83-28 vote with some Democrats, including incoming House Minority Leader Ron Saunders of Key West joining Republicans in voting for it.

An "outside the box" plan to reorganize the Florida Department of Health sailed through the House Health Care Regulation Policy Committee on Monday.

Sponsored by Rep. Matt Hudson, R-Naples, the legislation reduces the Department of Health’s mission from 13 to seven responsibilities and would require DOH to propose a new organizational structure, including reduction of divisions and bureaus, to the Legislature by November 2010.
