The Legislature sent its first bill of the year to Gov. Rick Scott Wednesday, when the House joined the Senate in passing the hotly contested SB 736, a measure basing teacher pay on performance and assessments instead of seniority and tenure.

Flanked by legislative leaders at a press conference after the vote was taken, Scott praised the passage of the bill. “This will help attract and retain the best teachers,” said Scott, adding that it was part of his plan to increase jobs in the Sunshine State.

While the RNC met in Washington Friday to determine who would be its next leader and the RPOF convenes this weekend in Orlando to determine who will replace outgoing chairman Sen. John Thrasher of Jacksonville, former Gov. Jeb Bush kicked off the Hispanic Action Network to help the GOP reach out to those voters.

Religious and political leaders from across the country and around the world continued Wednesday -- almost unanimously -- to condemn a planned Quran-burning event in Gainesville. "International Burn a Koran Day," to be led by Pastor Terry Jones from his evangelical World Outreach Center, is still scheduled for Saturday -- the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
