Since 2007, Florida's 67 counties have trimmed more than $3 billion from local budgets. Like state government, Florida's local communities have been committed to keeping taxes low and doing more with less.

Feeling the heavy pinch of employee pension costs, Florida counties are warning Tallahassee not to balance the faltering fund on their shoulders.
Indian River County Commissioner Peter O'Bryan this month urged the state to bring the Florida Retirement System "more into line with the private sector" by requiring contributions from new hires. Currently, local and state governments fully fund FRS.

If the Florida Legislature is going to make up the $3.5 billion deficit facing the state by reducing spending, Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, thinks elected officials should start by cutting their own benefits.

Florida senators and state officials Thursday took up where so many of their litigious-minded colleagues left off earlier in the week, taking the federal Environmental Protection Agency to task over its water quality standards. Those standards are set to be finalized in August 2012.
