Besides outgoing Gov. Charlie Crist, there were three former governors attending Rick Scott’s inauguration as the state’s 45th governor: Claude Kirk, who was elected in 1966; Bob Martinez, who won office in 1986; and Jeb Bush, who was elected in 1998 and 2002.

A Leon County judge upheld the Legislature’s ability to set tuition for the state’s 11 public universities, knocking down a challenge from former Gov. Bob Graham who thought the Board of Governors should control university costs.

Looking to help Florida “slingshot out of this recession,” State University System Chancellor Frank Brogan announced Monday the project winners from all 11 of Florida’s public universities. Universities competed for a share of $10 million in the final phase of the New Florida Initiative.

What role -- if any -- does state government have in shepherding Florida through tough economic times?

While Washington has taken the Keynesian approach of pumping public dollars into private sector (notably, banks) and shovel-ready public-works projects, Tallahassee has been more restrained. The focus, thus far, has been on providing job-creation incentives and balancing the budget -- a constitutional mandate not required of Washington.
