Surrogates are increasingly playing prominent roles in the Florida gubernatorial contest. Looking to win members of his new party over to him, former Gov. Charlie Crist had former state Sen. Dan Gelber out front this week, hitting Gov. Rick Scott for cutting education. The Crist team sent out an email from Gelber to supporters on Wednesday trying to rally Democrats against Scott on education.

Time to put the kibosh on talk that Adam Hollingsworth, Gov. Rick Scott’s chief of staff, will run against Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown in 2015. Reports emerged this week that Hollingsworth is selling his house in Jacksonville to continue his career in Tallahassee.

Possible Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson will be hitting the Sunshine State next week. Carson made headlines for speaking against Obamacare at the National Prayer Breakfast last year despite President Barack Obama being in attendance.

Gov. Rick Scott sent out newly appointed Lt. Gov. Carlos Lopez-Cantera to South Florida on Friday to reach out to supporters in South Florida. Lopez-Cantera was in Stuart on Friday morning to speak at the Martin County Republican Party Breakfast. Later in the day, Lopez-Cantera reached out to the business community, speaking at the Okeechobee and Boca Raton business round tables.

Decades before the Pilgrims gathered around a table in Massachusetts in 1621, Florida had seen at least two separate Thanksgiving celebrations and, as in the more familiar tale from New England, they involved native Americans and religious liberty.

The first one took place in 1564 on the southern bank of the St. Johns River in modern-day Jacksonville.
