When the news from Washington contains words such as million, billion and trillion, it’s all too easy for our eyes to glaze over. Numbers that big aren’t easy to grasp.

Unexpectedly weak job growth was not the most troubling part of the August jobs report. Nor was the drop in wages, painful as it is. The most daunting aspect is the continued drop in labor-force participation.
Pope Benedict XVI’s trip to Cuba later this month had the potential to greatly advance the cause of human freedom -- which is, after all, the continuation of Jesus Christ’s work on this earth.
Call it what you want -- a circus, a sideshow, or just plain old political rhetoric -- but for the past week America has watched the media elite and some in Washington bend over backward to turn attention away from an issue that is fundamental to the future of this country: Obamacare’s attack on individual liberty.
President Obama is right to draw attention to the soaring cost of a college education in America. However, his proposed solution will not only fail to fix the problem but is also likely to compound it by blunting the competition that is needed to shake up the world of higher education.

President Obama and Congress need to focus on policies in 2012 that will unleash the economic growth necessary to get the economy back on track, create jobs and lower the unemployment rate.
Led by Sen. George LeMieux, R-Fla., Republicans shut down a Democratic effort to extend unemployment benefits in states with the highest jobless rates.
