While the close battle for the Republican gubernatorial nomination and U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek’s demolishing of Jeff Greene for the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate election won the headlines, there were a number of dramatic contests in congressional primaries across Florida on Tuesday.

Every week, Sunshine State News offers a glimpse of the important business legislation and pivotal state issues being addressed in the Florida Legislature in the coming days.

What role -- if any -- does state government have in shepherding Florida through tough economic times?

While Washington has taken the Keynesian approach of pumping public dollars into private sector (notably, banks) and shovel-ready public-works projects, Tallahassee has been more restrained. The focus, thus far, has been on providing job-creation incentives and balancing the budget -- a constitutional mandate not required of Washington.
