With Republicans routing Democrats across the nation on Tuesday, the GOP won a veto-proof majority in the Florida House of Representatives as five incumbent Democrats went down to defeat. When the dust settled, Republicans controlled 81 of the 120 seats in the Florida House -- increasing their majority by five.

Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee continues to ramp up his operations in Florida. Huckabee, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and is considering making another attempt in 2012, filed papers for his HuckPAC to work at the state and local level here in the Sunshine State. He now enjoys a healthy financial advantage over his Democratic rival in the CFO race, former Rep. Loranne Ausley of Tallahassee.

With Rep. Pat Patterson, R-DeLand, term-limited and running an underdog campaign for the Republican state CFO nomination, a battle is developing to replace him in the 26th District House seat with serious candidates from both parties in the mix.

Four candidates have emerged in the district, which stretches across Flagler and Volusia Counties, west of Daytona Beach. The district includes Lake Helen, Orange City, De Leon Springs and parts of DeLand.

On Tuesday, the Associated Industries of Florida (AIF) endorsed Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, for state CFO and Republican U.S. Rep. Adam Putnam to serve as commissioner of agriculture and consumer services--but did not endorse any candidates for governor or attorney general.

The state's chief financial officer handles money matters in Florida, but as the campaign for the position starts to heat up, it appears that teacher performance pay will be an issue in the coming election, too.

Senate President Jeff Atwater, R-North Palm Beach, the favorite to win the Republican CFO nomination, was a strong supporter of the teacher performance pay plan that passed the Senate earlier in the session and the House early Friday morning.
