A group of educators, teacher advocates and lawmakers recently chosen by the governor to ensure Florida wins $700 million in federal money for education is recommending that the state implement a revised form of teacher performance pay.

And, says a member of the group, the decision was unanimous.

“I think that sends a powerful message to the governor that this is a good plan,” said the group's chairman, Alberto Carvalho, Superintendent of the Miami-Dade County School District

Businesses fretting over a major hike in the state unemployment compensation tax can relax. At least, for now.

On their first day of session, lawmakers delayed until 2012 a looming increase that could have resulted in as much as a twelvefold increase in the unemployment tax for businesses. Gov. Charlie Crist immediately signed the bill into law.

If taxes had not been delayed, the minimum unemployment tax businesses would pay per person would have risen from $8.40 to $100.30.  Businesses paying the maximum rate per person would have seen a rise from $378 to $459.

The Legislature is poised to act quickly and positively to delay for two years a major increase in the unemployment compensation tax.

It's a move that could save beleaguered employers as much as a twelvefold increase on their unemployment tax bills.

The legislation zipped through both Senate and House committees. Its supporters claim it will stimulate job creation and allow businesses to stay afloat in a down economy.

It appears voters in this district in Miami-Dade will be exchanging one Garcia for another. With Sen. Rudy Garcia, R-Hialeah, retiring due to term limits, former Rep. Rene Garcia, a Republican who served in the House for eight years, appears to be cruising back to Tallahassee. Rene Garcia has raised more than $317,000 for the race and has spent almost $136,000. With no Democrat in the race, he will face write-in candidate Alexis Dominguez come November.

Gov. Charlie Crist had a solitary message to millions of Floridians Wednesday -- fill out the census form.

“The census is very important for our fellow Floridians,” Crist said at a press conference. “Filling it out is an important civic duty.”

Florida can get up to $400 billion in federal funding with an accurate census count, according to the governor. He said the state can also gain an extra congressional seat.

The Senate Commerce Committee passed the Corporate Income Tax Rate Reduction bill today. The bill would secure a one-percent reduction in the corporate income tax rate, from 5.5 percent to 4.5 percent on the first $1 million of corporate taxable income.

Gov. Charlie Crist, who proposed the tax break, released a statement saying he was grateful to Sen. Rudy Garcia, R-Hialeah, and the Commerce Committee, which he serves as chairman, for working quickly to give corporations a bit of a break.
