The end is near. The last space shuttle mission soon will be completed. Unfortunately, because of a lack of vision and leadership in Washington, we may be seeing the beginning of the end for our national space program as well.

Florida’s unemployment rate remained at 12 percent in December, leaving the Sunshine State with the same unemployment rate it started with at the beginning of 2010, and 2.6 percent above the national jobless rate of 9.4 percent.

There's a growing realization on the Space Coast that the future of the area's economy and the future of space exploration are going to rely heavily on commercial space companies.
The U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill that will add one more space shuttle launch and fund the development of commercial and heavy-lift rockets, but it won’t save the jobs of more than 1,000 shuttle workers scheduled to be laid off Friday.
