Florida Right-to-Life PAC released its endorsements Thursday afternoon for the Aug. 24 primaries -- and while the pro-life political group backed some candidates, the PAC also sat out or passed on others, refusing to endorse either of the two leading Republican gubernatorial candidates.

Florida Democratic Party chairwoman Karen Thurman offered strong words of praise Friday for her party’s two candidates who have already been chosen -- former Rep. Loranne Ausley for state CFO and former Tallahassee Mayor Scott Maddox for commissioner of agriculture and consumer services. Thurman also revealed lines of attack against the Republican candidates for those offices.

The Florida Renewable Energy Producers Association will be holding a forum in Orlando on July 14 and 15 and have invited the major candidates for governor, the U.S. Senate and agriculture and consumer services commissioner. The Orange County League of Women Voters will moderate the forums for the candidates.

Kendrick Meek and billionaire real estate investor Jeff Greene, the two leading candidates seeking the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate race, met on Tuesday morning in their first debate. Despite different styles and backgrounds, Meek and Greene showed they agreed on a number of issues -- but that didn't stop them from attacking each another.

While the focus remains on California, where Jerry Brown, who was first elected governor in 1974, is seeking another chance, four other former governors -- Roy Barnes of Georgia, Terry Branstad of Iowa, Robert Erhlich of Maryland and John Kitzhaber of Oregon -- are waging campaigns for their old positions.

Attorney General Bill McCollum, currently locked in a tight battle with health-care executive Rick Scott for the Republican gubernatorial nomination, called for local taxes and property taxes to be frozen at their current levels for the next two years. The attorney general also called for caps on the growth of local governments.

Between the filing appearances of GOP gubernatorial candidates Rick Scott and Bill McCollum at the Division of Elections on Thursday, former Tallahassee Mayor Scott Maddox filed his paperwork to run for commissioner of agriculture and consumer services -- and announced he was being backed by one of his chief rivals for the Democratic nomination.

Accompanying Maddox was former Suwannee County Commissioner Randy Hatch, who had been running for the nomination for the Democratic nomination for more than a year

Emmy award-winning journalist Deborah Gianoulis, a fixture on Jacksonville television as an evening news anchor for almost 25 years, announced Tuesday that she was running as a Democrat against Sen. John Thrasher of Jacksonville, chairman of the Republican Party of Florida. Thrasher’s district stretches from Nassau County, through Jacksonville and Duval County, and includes parts of St. Johns and Flagler counties before ending in Volusia County.

With Rep. Pat Patterson, R-DeLand, term-limited and running an underdog campaign for the Republican state CFO nomination, a battle is developing to replace him in the 26th District House seat with serious candidates from both parties in the mix.

Four candidates have emerged in the district, which stretches across Flagler and Volusia Counties, west of Daytona Beach. The district includes Lake Helen, Orange City, De Leon Springs and parts of DeLand.

While Gov. Charlie Crist and gubernatorial candidate Bud Chiles are getting most of the attention, Florida is seeing a large number of independents taking on both the Democrats and Republicans in the 2010 elections.

“It’s exciting,” said Michael Tupper, campaign manager for independent congressional candidate Troy Stanley who has offered a conservative challenge to veteran Republican U.S. Rep. Ander Crenshaw.
