CD 8: Some GOP Fund-Raising Success, but Nothing Like Alan Grayson’s $3.5 Million

Democrat Alan Grayson looks to defend his congressional seat against one of a host of Republican challengers. Grayson has raised an astonishing $3.5 million, $2.9 million from individuals and more than $533,000 from PACs. Grayson had more than $1.4 million cash on hand on June 30.

Republicans in the race have posted impressive fund-raising numbers but nowhere near what Grayson has raised. Grayson can sit back for a few weeks and wait for a Republican to emerge -- after they've spent their campaign cash in the primary contest.

This looks like a close battle for the Republican nomination. Businessman Bruce O'Donoghue has raised more than $378,000 in donations and kicked in more than $132,000 of his own money, leaving more than $298,000 on hand. Despite a late entry in the race, former state Senator and House Speaker Daniel Webster raised almost $241,000 and had almost $165,000 in the bank. Staffers for Rep. Kurt Kelly, R-Ocala, said on Friday that they had almost $138,000 on hand. Having given his campaign $77,000, Todd Long, an attorney who ran for the seat in 2008, raised more than $143,000 from individuals and had $109,000 in the bank on June 30. Tea Party activist Patricia Sullivan has brought in more than $56,000 and has less than $9,000 on hand.

Entrepreneur Peg Dunmire is running as the Tea Party candidate.

Grayson is controversial and a Democrat that Republicans love to hate. Whoever emerges from what could be a tight primary has a chance to knock Grayson off, but the incumbent’s war chest makes him the favorite though not an overwhelming one.

In the end, it's not the size of the war chest but the message. This time it's crystal clear. Continue on the path to socialization, reckless spending and debt, more taxes and a sinking economy by voting for Alan Grayson or balanced budget, smaller government, less tax and a flourishing economy with Patricia Sullivan.

Well, I guess, if the amount of $’s received is equated to votes, Grayson already won. But that’s not the case. A candidate still must win the voters’ trust then their votes before they actually are elected to office. And that is why Patricia Sullivan will be the next US Representative for Florida’s 8th district. She has all of the conservative values that we want in an elected official … but she also has the Trust of the voters.

My take is that Patricia Sulivan's patriot army is a formidible force to be reckoned with in this race. Am sure that Alan Grayson does not receive the same "warm and fuzzy" love as does Patricia. I am proud to support Patricia Sullivan for the Florida 8 seat because she is a true American patriot not politician that loves this country and her citizens.

I cannot imagine anyone giving one cent to Alan Grayson given his political record and his inability to 'talk with any intelligence'. I am a registered Republican and was considering changing to an Independent until I became familiar with Patricia Sullivan's platform. If you are not familiar with her, then you owe it to yourself and your children to do so.

Don't make the mistake of handicapping this race using yesterdays criteria. This is a whole new generation of citizen politician. Yes, money is important but as Jason Chaffetz Representative from Utah proved, it's not how much money you spend it's how many vote your campaign generates. He won after being outspent $8 to $1. I'm sure that a candidate like conservative Republican Patricia Sullivan finds it more comforting getting $10 per contributor for every $100 received rather than a $100 contribution from only one person. That translates to 10 votes to 1.

Goliath was taken out with a war chest of only 5 smooth stones and only one of them were necessary. The candidate, Patricia Sullivan, that appears to have the smallest war chest may indeed be the David that takes out the Goliath, Alan Grayson, with her one smooth stone!
