Florida Chamber Chief Writes Off Union Bank Threats

Wilson: Call for workers to withdraw funds reveals a poor grasp of economics

Staging their stunt of the week, Florida public-employee unions called on members Thursday to withdraw funds from five banks in protest of labor-reform legislation.

The unions, representing some 20,000 workers, targeted Bank of America, PNC Bank, Regions Bank, SunTrust and Wachovia, whose executives sit on the Florida Chamber of Commerce board of directors. The Chamber is among the leading business groups lobbying to end payroll withholding of union dues by government agencies.

At a sparsely attended news conference outside the Orlando Chamber of Commerce office, labor leaders estimated that the five banks could lose $10 million in deposits as a result of the union initiative.

Florida Chamber President Mark Wilson acknowledged the unions' fiscal clout -- "it could be $10 million, it could be $100 million" -- but he dismissed Thursday's event as another in a series of publicity stunts by labor leaders.

"They carried a casket to [Rep.] Chris Dorworth's office, saying his bill would be the death of public education and unions. They put tape over their mouths in Tallahassee, as if anyone cares.

"Last week, they threatened several senators at the Senate Rules Committee. I'm no longer surprised by these tactics," Wilson said.

Wilson added, "What we have here in this country, all the way to the White House, are unions pushing a socialistic agenda of bigger government and higher taxes."

But beyond the rhetoric and the threats, Wilson said the root problem is a lack of understanding of basic economics.

"These union leaders have never had private-sector experience in terms of running a small business or putting their own capital on the line or meeting a payroll. These unions are demonstrating for the world to see that they just don't understand how jobs are created in the private sector and how the private economy works."

As further evidence, Wilson noted that he has received messages from public-sector union members who say they are taking their bank deposits to other states.

"The union leaders apparently don't understand that their own members have loans for homes and autos at banks here. They apparently don't know where loans come from," Wilson said.

That said, Wilson averred that unions can serve a worthwhile purpose in defending members on the job. "There is a role for them, unfortunately taxpayers do not realize they're negotiating against them."

To facilitate understanding and dialogue, Wilson pledged to pay for 100 Florida union leaders to take an online course in "Economics 101."

"We need an adult conversation about making Florida the No. 1 job-creating state in the country," he said.

Organizers of Thursday's union rally did not respond to Sunshine State News' request for comment.

The Florida Bankers Association, a trade group representing the state's banks, condemned the unions' call to withdraw.

“This action by the unions in withdrawing monies from FDIC-insured banks does not make sense,” FBA President and CEO Alex Sanchez said in a statement.

“Banks comprise only a small percentage of the Chamber’s diverse membership. Will the unions also lead a boycott against hundreds of other businesses that are also Chamber members?”

Though it's unclear where participating union members might move their cash, Sanchez said loans come from deposits that are reinvested and "moves like this one by unions withdrawing monies from FDIC-insured banks are counterproductive."

Arrogance at it's best, when did these people decide to start attacking working people. Lets see Union leaders are smart enough to get contracts and benefits for their employees but need economics 101. Business owners cut benefits for their employees and hold on to profits instead of investing in our state, but workers still spend their money in their local communities supporting local business. Now do they also want to tell us what we can have deducted from our paychecks they also what control of where we spend it.........Serious Arrogance!! ......These people need marketing and business 101, not a good idea to tick off your customers, cause they will not support your business. To the CEO's go back to your multi million dollar homes and private schools for your children and leave the rest of us alone, either that or step up to the plate and invest in our state instead of trying to divide it.

Why is the concept that the unions and its members would pull their money from the banks that sit on the Board of Directors of the Florida Chamber such a surprise? It's a very basic concept, when a business no longer provides good service, a good product or in this case a disservice to certain customers, then you lose those customers . This concept doesn't require a basic "economics 101" class, just common sense. Just a small note, other banks are lining up for our business and calling every day. I think this is referred to as "free market" or "capitalism". Then again, maybe I'm wrong , I haven't taken "economics 101".

Right on, I always thought we had the right to put our money where we wanted to for what ever reason but I didn't take econ 101 either, just a life of "live and learn"

Hundreds of organizations use automatic deductions from state paychecks. Singling out unions for political reasons, and blocking them from the same service used by all the others guarantees litigation, and further erodes the customer base for Florida businesses that serve public employees.

The states work force is there to do the state's business, not the business of their employees. Further, unions can and should do their own bookkeeping and dues collection services. Their membership can give them the ability to automatically deduct dues from their bank or credit union or to charge their dues to their credit card if they desire to do so. In any case, it never should have been allowed and now that the public is aware or the practice, it needs to be stopped.

So if that is the case then all of my deductions should be removed from my paycheck. That would be health care spending account, insurance, social security, federal taxes including unemployment etc. Then I will make all appropriate payments to those parties in time like all my other bills

The chamber of commerce nor the public should not tell me as an employee who can take what from my check. My union has never held a gun to my head to have this done. I have elected to do this and wish to see it continue. I am sure if it effected you in some way you would be speaking of how unfair that would be.

If this wasn't a huge attempt of union busting why would the chamber be so involved. I find it ironic that the headquarters for the State Chamber is in Orlando has not paid the city any money to rent a multi million dollar building for the 13 + years since they have occupied the building. Along with that is free landscape maintenance and many other perks. Good old fashion Economics 101, along with the Performing Art Center, Areana and a long list of projects that are under funded and dependant on us the tax payers.

Mark Wilson is an arrogant idiot. Furthermore, he is a bought and paid for minion who obviously doesn't have a clue who purchases goods and services, takes out loans, and does the work in this country. The Florida Chamber of Commerce has not been elected to run this state and many members of the Chamber are not happy with its actions and goals.

The last time I checked, the chamber was supposed to be building bridges, not destroying them. I think it's time for more intelligent chamber leadership, leadership that won't allow itself to be manipulated by political zealotry. Middle class customers comprise a huge revenue source for Florida business. Wilson looking down his nose at these customers is bad for business.

You must have taken Economics 101- what is it that you think he is so great for- ruining the middle class, using the Chamber millions for Political lobbyists, or just for how stupid he really is about this! I hope he is kicked of the Chamber board and see what he knows then.
