Florida Unemployment Reaches 12 Percent

55 counties have double-digit unemployment rates

Florida’s unemployment outlook remains bleak, with the state Agency for Workforce Innovation report released Friday showing a jobless rate of 12 percent for November.

The number is up slightly from October’s 11.9 percent. There are 1.1 million Floridians out of work, and nonagricultural employment stands at 7.2 million people, with 300 jobs added in November.

The unemployment figures are only part of Florida’s jobs problem. If discouraged and underemployed workers -- those who have given up looking for work or are working in part-time jobs involuntarily -- are counted in the jobless numbers, Florida’s unemployment rate jumps to 20 percent.

After unemployment peaked at 12.3 percent in March, the rate fell to 11.4 percent in June before ticking upward. While statistics for November reflected the fifth straight month of job gains after three years of job losses, the unemployment rate has increased due to new and newly encouraged workers entering the work force. New entrants and those re-entering the work force make up 32.7 percent of the unemployed.

“Even though it’s pretty stable, relatively flat, it’s going in the right direction,” said AWI chief economist Rebecca Rust.

Despite the dismal numbers, out-of-work Floridians did receive some good news this week when a tax bill that included the extension of 13 months of unemployment benefits passed both chambers of Congress. President Barack Obama signed the bill Friday, which means thousands of Floridians will be able to receive unemployment benefits that had run out earlier this month.

Florida's extended benefits program, that pays up to 20 weeks of extra benefits to unemployed workers who have run through their 79 weeks of regular state and federal benefits, ended on Dec. 4. Gov. Charlie Crist signed an executive order Friday to enact another extended benefits period, enabling AWI to begin paying eligible unemployed workers next week.

Thank you Florida Republicans for the high unemployment rate. I can't wait until Scott cuts the corporate tax rate even more. Please explain this to me? The repubs dominate here, so why do we have such high unemployment? You can't blame the unions because there aren't that many here nor do they have any real power. So tell me, propaganda-meister, why is unemployment so high here?

Six month from Jan. 1, 2011 the positive effects of those "damn" Republicans will have you giving all the credit to your "lame-ducks",; including your one term president who thought federal moneys could spur an economy as big and complex as ours.
Or you'll be putting salt on your hat as you prepair to eat it..

My first instinct is to tell you that you better hope education is not cut even further because if people like you are complaining and can't spell correctly then we have a bigger problem then we think, by the way it's prepare - not prepair.

Maybe you should not be so quick to call the dems "lame-ducks", after all it was the Republicans who FIRST put this country into a defecit. President Obama did what he and his advisors believed what was best for this country. I don't agree with everything he does, however, I don't expect a 2 or 4 year miracle especially when it took 8 years to drag this economy down.

WHY-DO YOU FOLKS RANT ABOUT GRAMMAR AND SYNTAX----A BIT LIKE FUSSING OVER DECK CHAIRS ON THE TITANIC,EHHH?! What SHOULD concern you is the pure amalgamated crap of strung-together statistics that have politicians and pundits mouth-spewing heralds of better shopping profits this season--horse nuts! The sales are strung out longer ,calender-wise---deeper cuts in prices, longer hours----and not necessarily more temp or permanent jobs! The sales are up on upscale clothing, jewelry-----when folks can't pay the bills, credit card debts, or mortgages--------do they think we fell off a turnip-wagon?! Pure fabrication--and it does not resolve the issues, nor soon-to-come inflation, nor the real fact that even if Americans had the money to buy-the products are not American manufactured items! BAHHHHHH-HUMBUG!!!!

...and "THE WIZARD OF OZ IS GONNA GIVE US A HEART, A BRAIN, SOME COURAGE, AND A RETURN TRIP TO KANSAS"--the economic system is irreversibly broke, in spite of any efforts by any politician or economist-and it WAS NOT BY ACCIDENT! If you all believe in "THE LONE GUNMEN", or 9-11 as a group of self-contained ISLAMIC TERRORISTS who did not get a group of countries sanctioning the event-perhaps----you should go back to fussing over locating your deck chair on The Titanic for a better view---
