Name
Gerald “Jerry” Bailey
Age
64
Where do you work, what is your position there and how long have you worked for this company?
I am currently the commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. During my career, I served in North Carolina as a state trooper, in the private sector, and with the Florida Lottery ... but have a total of 29 years with FDLE.
If you graduated from college, where did you go?
I have a bachelor’s degree in criminology and a master’s degree in public administration -- both from The Florida State University.
How long have you lived in Tallahassee?
Since 1969 with a three-year side trip to the West Palm Beach FDLE office.
Are you married? If so, how many children do you have?
Married to the same wonderful woman for 42 years ... two sons, one a national computer company executive, the other a physician; two granddaughters and a grandson.
What brought you to your current job?
My career has centered around law enforcement investigations and administration. I left state government for several years to run a new business with my wife and later returned to state government as the inspector general at the Florida Lottery. I was honored to be named as FDLE’s commissioner in 2006 and return to the agency where I had spent much of my professional career.
Describe what you do?
Lead a statewide public safety agency that provides investigative/forensic information and training services to assist the criminal justice community and protect Florida’s citizens and visitors.
What were you doing the last five years of your life?
I was appointed commissioner of FDLE in 2006.
What do you want to do with your life long-term?
I’m doing it! There is nothing more rewarding than working with the dedicated and professional men and women that make up this agency and seeing firsthand how much of a positive impact FDLE makes across the state.
What do you do in your free time?
I enjoy fishing, reading and being on the water
If you could be granted one wish right now, what would it be?
That Congress stand firm on not raising the debt limit without concurrent spending reductions, and holds the line on any tax increases.
What would you change about Tallahassee and/or the Capitol if you could?
Florida needs a "Take-Your-Dog-To-Work-Day"
