Miami Republicans Again Deny Second Amendment Rights

December 8, 2017 - 10:00am

Our founders knew that it was a natural human right to own and use firearms for self-preservation and included the Second Amendment to the Constitution to protect that right. Whether you live in Miami or Pensacola, citizens should always have the right to protect themselves and their families. Law enforcement does a great job protecting citizens but there are times where people can be in imminent danger and cannot wait for law enforcement to be there in what could be a matter of seconds before someone could face death from an armed criminal.

In the last session, state Sen. Greg Steube, R-Sarasota, filed several bills dealing with “gun free zones.” We have painfully learned recently that “gun free zones” are just an open invitation to criminals that know law abiding citizens are unable to defend themselves. Steube’s bills would have repealed certain statutes that prohibited concealed weapon permit holders from carrying a firearm on college campuses and airport terminals among others.

In the Senate, all gun related legislation must go through the Judiciary Committee which is chaired by Steube. The Judiciary Committee is made up of six Republicans and four Democrats. We know pro-gun rights legislation usually follow party lines with Republicans supporting gun rights and Democrats consistently vote against gun rights. In the last session held earlier this year, two Republican senators broke ranks in the Judiciary Committee and voted to kill any legislation to protect our right to self-protection. Miami Republicans Sens. Renee Garcia and Anitere Flores not only said no, they said hell no! Without support from the two Miami Republicans, the gun bills were dead.

Fast forward to today. Steube again filed bills to protect our gun rights along with Sen. Kelli Stargel, R-Lakeland. SB 274 from Stargel would have allowed a concealed weapon permit holder to carry a concealed firearm on school property if a religious institution is located on the property. Currently, firearms are allowed in church if the chapel is not on a school campus. A legal concealed weapon permit holder faces a felony if they carry to a house of worship on the same grounds as a school.

After the tragic shooting in Texas, it seems like this legislation would make sense. Most churches cannot afford to hire armed security, so allowing a parishioner with a concealed weapon permit would allow them to have protection. Steube’s SB 134 would have allowed concealed weapon permit-holders to carry a firearm in to courthouses and temporarily surrender and store the gun at a security checkpoint. Currently, concealed weapon permit holders must leave their firearms at home or store them in cars and be unarmed for a period outside the courthouse. Another bill--SB 148--from Steube would have reduced penalties for the first or second violation for people who have concealed-weapon licenses and openly carry.  Also, SB 148 would have provided that a person licensed to carry a concealed weapon or firearm would not violate certain provisions if the firearm is temporarily and openly displayed.

This past Tuesday, in the Senate Judiciary committee, Garcia and Flores repeated their total disregard of gun rights and voted no to these bills to allow people the right to protect themselves though Garcia voted yes on SB 148 after voting no on SB 274 and SB 134. To his credit, Garcia explained his concerns and why he could not vote for SB 274 and SB 134. What was far more disappointing was Flores sitting quietly through the Judiciary Committee, voting no and offering no reasons for her votes and presenting no alternatives.

So, for the second session in a row, we will not have any real legislation to protect our right to self-defense. Can we blame the Democrats? Not really. Republicans Garcia and Flores have shown they have no interest in protecting people’s rights of self-protection and the blame for the failure to pass gun-rights legislation sits squarely on their shoulders.

Yes, Yes, guns everywhere, no restrictions, right . . . . . . . . as Antonin Scalia observed: "Like most rights, the Second Amendment right is not unlimited. It is not a right to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose: For example, concealed weapons prohibitions have been upheld under the Amendment or state analogues. The Court’s opinion should not be taken to cast doubt on longstanding prohibitions on the possession of firearms by felons and the mentally ill, or laws forbidding the carrying of firearms in sensitive places such as schools and government buildings, or laws imposing conditions and qualifications on the commercial sale of arms." [Scalia; DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA v. HELLER] . . . . . . . . . to whine otherwise . . . . . . . . PATHETIC . . .

it is a party with no direction, except to give large amounts of cash back to its benefactors...

Marxists who infect our government plus the media prostitutes who protect them will gleefully lie, falsify, fabricate, slander, libel, deceive, delude, bribe, and treasonably betray the free citizens of the United States into becoming an unarmed population. Unarmed populations have been treated as slaves and chattel since the dawn of history. The Second Amendment foes lying about gun control - Firearms are our constitutionally mandated safeguard against tyranny by a powerful federal government. Only dictators, tyrants, despots, totalitarians, and those who want to control and ultimately to enslave you support gun control. No matter what any president, senator, congressman, or mainstream media hooker tells you concerning the statist utopian fantasy of safety and security through further gun control: They are lying. If their lips are moving, they are lying about gun control. These despots truly hate America.. These tyrants hate freedom, liberty, personal responsibility, and private property. But the reality is that our citizens’ ownership of firearms serves as a concrete deterrent against despotism. They are demanding to hold the absolute power of life and death over you and your family. Ask the six million Jews, and the other five million murdered martyrs who perished in the Nazi death camps, how being disarmed by a powerful tyranny ended any chances of fighting back. Ask the murdered martyrs of the Warsaw Ghetto about gun control. Their single agenda is to control you after you are disarmed. When the people who want to control you hold the absolute power of life and death over your family, you have been enslaved. Will we stand our ground, maintaining our constitutionally guaranteed Second Amendment rights, fighting those who would enslave us? American Thinker

Gun Free Zones are killing zones.. Mindless gun-free zones are what mass shootings have in common. They are killing zones, free from good guys with guns. That’s why the Aurora movie theater killer chose the more distant theater where guns were not allowed and thus where he wouldn’t have to worry about his plan being foiled.

Sen. Kelli Stargel's bill was actually about restoring the private property rights of churches. In violation of the Constitution, the State has usurped the private property rights of churches by prohibiting churches from allowing church goers to exercise Second Amendment rights on church private property if at anytime the church conducts a day care or child care program on church property. An existing unconstitutional statute violates private property rights and the separation of church and state. In my book that makes Sen. Flores and Sen. Garcia not only anti-gun but also anti-private property rights and anti-religious freedom. They seem to want to move America closer to the anti-gun, anti-freedom, anti-private property rights politics of Cuba where Castro took their guns, their, freedom, their property, and their dignity. Wonder what their ancestors think of that?

Maybe it's time to sue the legislature for violating the 2nd, 10th, and 14th amendments of the Constitution. They are taking and using powers they don't have under the Constitution.

Don't sue the legislature...go to court and sue the government for infringing yourrights. Leaving it to the legislature is just playing a fool in the charade. The only way to secure your rights is by filing suit in court. Take it out of the legislators hands and let the judiciary hammer it out. Its the only way to rectify these wrongs being perpetuated by the crooks in the legislature.

The prescribed chief end and duty of the RINO is to protect the Demshevik insurrection from any resistance.

Common sense & Reason have NEVER been prerequisites in DEMOCRAT Political Party "politics" ! The Second Amendment, and it's companion Constitutional Amendments, if lost, will NEVER "come around again' in the remainder of this World's history; and "Freedom & Liberty" will be replaced, ultimately and utterly, by bondage...

They should be sued for violating their oath to office. These Senators are breaking the law.

...and worse !

I support second amendment rights. I'm a gun owner. But for the life of me I cannot figure out how anyone can think that open carry in urban areas is a good idea. Its one of the most foolish ideas every pushed. I;m mixed about the campus carry laws. Given that students are the most irresponsible people on the planet. Get a license and conceal your weapon.

"Concealing" one's weapon, is the "COMMON SENSE" action that ALL CCW permit owners "practice" so as not to reveal advantageous and necessary defensive postures of themselves, and others, in "life threatening" confrontations and situations. READ your "Second Amendment" thoroughly: It is CLEAR & CONCISE. "Open Carry" is NOT an end. in and of, itself: It's purpose is to prevent an unintentional and inadvertent "STATUTORY violation" should a CCW permit holder's weapon be accidentally and unintentionally revealed by shifting clothing or necessary physical exertions. IT'S as "SIMPLE" as THAT ! ! ! Suppressing the indefeasible SECOND Amendment, in ANY manner, is precursor to suppressing the FIRST Amendment, and the 'start' to suppressing ALL other Amendments ( the NINETEENTH Amendment included and notwithstanding)...

Exactly !!!!! Ignorant people will never understand. Liberal Government will try to make you a criminal to control your life.

Sick of you gun maker mouthpieces ruling up the cheap seats. Don’t know how you sleep At night.

Think I have seen enough damage already done to the country from the "Liberty First Network" - and the "Libertarian" Party. Liberty = "My way or the highway". Concerning guns, I would recommend Gabby Giffords and Capt. Mark Kelly as experts on the ramifications of gun violence, open carry, reciprocity, and silencers.

"You" have not "seen enough damage" you have watched and have read about the damage from the mainstream media. That media does Not report any good life saving gun use, cops overpowered saved by an armed citizen, home or business owners saved by having a gun. If you pay attention the media does lie and edit stories to fit the agenda ( disarming us and dividing us ).
