Poll: Webster Beats Down 'Angry' Grayson

Republican nears 50 percent mark in Central Florida's 8th Congressional District

Dan Webster and Alan Grayson - Sunshine State News Poll

Dan Webster and Rep. Alan Grayson

Holding a steady 7-point lead over a controversial and increasingly malodorous incumbent, Republican Daniel Webster is poised to knock out U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson, a new Sunshine State News Poll shows.

Webster, a former state senator, leads Grayson, D-Orlando, 48-41. Florida TEA Party candidate Peg Dunmire garnered 4 percent, No Party Affiliation candidate George Metcalfe got 1 percent, and 5 percent of respondents were undecided.

In a previous poll, conducted Sept. 25, Webster led Grayson 43-36, an identical 7-point margin.

"Webster has to be the favorite here. Grayson has failed to turn his negative image around, and is still viewed in a negative light by a 55-38 margin," said Jim Lee, president of Voter Survey Service, which conducted both polls. "This means Grayson has very little if any room to grow."

Daniel Webster and Alan Grayson -- Sunshine State News Poll Table
While Webster's negatives climbed 12 points since the earlier poll, undoubtedly spurred by Grayson's relentlessly negative advertising, the Republican maintains a relatively healthy favorable/unfavorable rating of 47/33.

Lee said nothing has changed the "fundamental equation for Grayson" in Central Florida's 8th Congressional District, where President Barack Obama gets a 52 percent job disapproval score (vs. 51 percent last month).

"Given that this district leans Democratic in raw registration numbers, Grayson's only hope is to turn out his base at a higher rate than the opponent's," Lee said.

But even then, Lee cautioned, the district still trends Republican in a nonpresidential year.

"The key difference in the poll when compared to last time is that Webster is surging with independents, now leading them by a 48-33 margin over Grayson, which is a reversal from a 42-33 Grayson lead in the last poll (a net swing of 24 points)," Lee reported.

Kathy Mears, a spokeswoman for Webster, said, "Although we are being outspent and deluged with some of the most negative and dirtiest ads in the country, we do sense a great deal of support from voters in the district. We trust that our positive message will win the day in Central Florida."

Grayson campaign manager Susannah Randolph responded that the contest "is much closer than Daniel Webster and the Republicans would like to admit, being that they spent nearly $2 million in negative ads to defeat Congressman Grayson."

The Oct. 13 filings with the Federal Election Commission show Grayson has raised $5,120,846, with $814,741 cash on hand and $1,080,966 in debt. Webster reported raising $1,317,108, with $340,119 cash on hand and no debt.

Meanwhile, the impact of the two third-party candidates is negligible and diminishing.

Dunmire and Metcalfe each lost 2 percentage points since the Sept. 25 survey, and their unfavorable ratings climbed sharply.

"Possibly viewed as spoilers, they are unlikely to cost Webster the race," Lee observed.

Dunmire was not immediately available for comment, but TEA (Taxed Enough Already) Party consultant Doug Geutzloe declared, "The Dunmire campaign will peak on Election Day and not a day sooner."

Metcalfe did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Since the Sunshine State News Poll shows Webster’s margin widening to 11 points among voters who say they are most likely to cast ballots (51-40), Lee projected that the Republican could top 50 percent on election night.

Even though both Webster and Grayson have increased their support in their respective bases (Webster up 7 with Republicans, Grayson up 8), the swing of independents against Grayson could prove to be his undoing.

And the congressman's rising unfavorable rating -- now worse than Obama's -- appears to be downright lethal.

"Grayson’s favorable-unfavorable image is now a staggering negative ratio of 55-30, compared to a negative 47-36 ratio in September, so it’s apparent his TV campaign has completely backfired," Lee said.

The Democrat's bombastic, shoot-from-the-lip style caught the attention this week of conservative columnist George Will, who called Grayson "the worst politician in America."

Citing highly negative and inaccurate ads that alternately labeled Webster "Taliban Dan" and a "draft dodger," Will suggested that Grayson's "vulgarity" and non-stop anger have caught up with the freshman lawmaker.

Noting that Grayson has even mocked Webster's name as "18th century," Will aptly quoted Massachusetts Sen. Daniel Webster (1782-1852): “Anger is not an argument.”

The Sunshine State News Poll surveyed 801 likely voters Oct. 22-25 via an automated tracking survey. The margin of error is +/- 3.46 percent.

Alan Grayson is a cretin. It is inconceivable that anyone could be this insufferably crude and deceitful and still serve in Congress. He is a total embarrassment; worse, a menacing bore. Hopefully, the voters of Florida's Eight Congressional District will go to the polls next Tuesday and swiftly, in a landslide, remove this vile and offending blowhard and replace him with the far more competent and attractive Daniel Webster, the embodiment of integrity. This isn't even a partisan issue. Democrats should join Republicans and Independents in renouncing Grayson's lying and vicious character assassination and send him packing to a cave somewhere.

the TEA (Taxed Enough Already) party is NOT associated with the Tea Party movement. If you check out the West and East Orlando Tea Party's websites they have statements and articles about this fake tea party and how even it's start is very questionable.

a vote for Dunmire is a vote for Grayson.

Daniel Webster's thoughtful style will serve him well in the next Congress. He has strong coalition-building skills, honed sharp by his years in Florida's state house, and necessary to govern during the next two years. He'll make a fine Congressman.

republican tea party people who just woke up after 8 years of Bush destoying the country, can draw pictures of Obama as hitler or demonize him as the anti-Christ and that's OK --- But Grayson makes the statement that Webster was a draft dodger (which he was) or that Fox news is a republican mouth piece (which it is) and he's out of line..

I like how both Grayson and you equate medically disqualified as "draft dodger". I am retired after 20 years with the US Navy and detest those who use MY service as a tool. By equated draft dodging and being medically exempt as the same thing I feel that Grayson and his ilk (i.e. YOU) as disrespecting all veterns. Generally I consider those that were exemped as brothers in spirit, while I consider d those that dodged the draft as traitors.

P.S. Eric as to Bush destroying the country after 8 years, excuse me but you need a refresher course in politics and history. The democrats CONTROLLED congress since 2006 (which puts them in power for 4 years) during which they approved dummies like you buying houses they could ill afford, increasing funding for the most politically corrupt group in America, ACORN, gave sweetheart deals to unions (all the while saying how much they want to help middle class folks) - (remember that good ole Obamacare where he and Pelosi carved out ANY increase in insurance fees for ONLY UNION MEMBERS. All you liberal/marxist/socialist bottom-feeders should rot in hell for what you're doing to this country. ADVICE - get a damn job instead of protesting every hour on the hour.

Hey Eric, what drug are you on? Webster is the most gracious, God fearing wonderful human being that ever entered politics. He's what "Mr. Smith Goes To Washington" is all about. Contrast that with Grayson's filth and lies. He never met a republican woman yet that he didn't label, "whore". His lies about Webster with that "Taliban Dan" ad, really did him in. It was so full of lies that even MSNBC and CNN noted that it was terrible. Come on folks, let's send a message to that SOB Grayson and vote for Webster (who really cares about people and is not a marxist, Obama kissing as$ like Grayson).

Draft-dodger? Medically disqualified now equals draft-dodger? You dare to condemn those who are physically unable to serve in the military as unpatriotic draft-dodgers. Erik Brown is a mean-spirited little boy who should have been spanked on his Grayson.

You are ignorant. You obviously have not done your homework and your silly comment underscores your complete lack of any brains. I am a veteran and I have taken both sides of this "draft dodger" pooh into account. He obviously was not a draft dodger - I wonder what branch you served in? All that being said erik r brown... Who's mouthpiece are you??? It appears to a ever-growing abundance of would-be voters that the foul and vulgar Mr. Grayson may soon be looking for a new career.

Newsflash, Erik - many Republicans were just as critical of Bush's spending ways as we are of Obama's. The notion that Republicans only started caring when it was a black man in office, is phony and unsubstantiated. Furthermore, the majority of conservatives aren't scummy enough to stoop to the level that liberals were all too glad to put themselves, with their portrayals of Bush in unflattering personas, but go ahead and pretend that there's a moral equivalency.

Lastly, the only ones that buy the claim that Fox News is the "mouthpiece of the Republican party", are fools like you that view anything that gives both sides an equal opportunity to state their opinions and points of view, in that light. Juan Williams, Alan Colmes, Bob Beckel, Lanny Davis, Chris Wallace, Joe Trippi, Alicia Menendez, etc. are not Republicans. But it's cool to just ignore that which hurts your pathetic cause.

While I agree with much of what you say, to argue that Fox is totally unbiased is just disingenuous at the very least. It's about as unbiased as MSNBC. Fox provides a right wing counterpoint to some of the obviously left wing cable news outlets. Just like Huffington Post and Drudge are counterpoints on the internet. There is a reason News Corp donated $1,000,000,000 to elect GOP governers, and a reason why it employs polarizing figures like Rove and Palin. That reason is Fox has a political agenda, just as MSNBC and to a lesser extent CNN have an opposing agenda. Makes you long for journalists like Cronkite and Murrow, but sadly, those days are gone.

Although I should say in defense of the voters, Grayson's favorability is only 30%, even though his support is 41%.

So clearly there are 11% that agree he is a sociopathic creep, but they happen to agree with his stance on the issues.

I'm cool with that. If you believe certain policies are best for the country, it is reasonable to vote for the candidate who supports those even if that candidate is a truly disgusting human being.

The reference is to Mussolini during the 1930s. No one knew about Eichmann's relationship to trains carrying Jews to their deaths until after 1945. The expression was very popular 15 years before Eichmann's name was ever known. GENIUS????
