Government

In Tallahassee This Week

If Gov. Charlie Crist wants to be nice to the Legislature – though really, there’s no indication he does – he may this week officially call the special session he’s already said he’ll likely pursue. Crist has said he wants lawmakers to return at the end of May, most probably the week of May 24, for the special session on banning oil drilling and alternative energy policy. Typically, governors and legislative leaders have given lawmakers at least a week advance notice that their services are being requested and they’ll need to come to town, which means Monday would be a good day to officially call them back. Though if there’s anything we’ve learned about Charlie Crist, it’s that he doesn’t always follow the playbook.

Also this week, Crist will be spending some quality time with the state budget, which he now has and can sign or veto anytime between now and around the end of the month.

Otherwise, it’s mostly oil – watching the Gulf coast for any sign of oily mammals or tar balls headed this way, watching BP to see if it will pay for ads to tell everyone that there’s no oil here yet, and watching politicians to see how often and how strongly they can condemn the company, the spill and other things associated with oil. How quickly they forget that just a year ago with gasoline hitting record highs they were clamoring to drill, baby, drill.
