St. Petersburg Report: Port of Tampa a growing economic engine for the region and state

The Port of Tampa generated 14,791 direct jobs in 2012, and an additional 14,397 induced jobs and 51,028 indirect and related user jobs in the local economy, according to an economic impact study just released by the Tampa Port Authority and Martin Associates. 

Port activities generate $4.2 billion in wages and salaries, with an average annual earnings of a port-dependent job at $46,300.

Taylor drew support from four board members — Joe York, John Newman, John Falconetti and Robert Spohrer.

St. Petersburg Equality Florida plans rallies today for SCOTUS LGBT rulings

Sometime over the next few days, the U.S. Supreme Court will announce two of the most important LGBT rights decisions of this decade. The Court will rule on two cases—the constitutionality of the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8.

In anticipation of these significant SCOTUS decisions, Equality Florida is organizing a series of free rallies in St. Petersburg, Tampa and other cities around the state.

St. Petersburg Mary Mulhern fundraiser set for June 26

Supporters of Tampa City Council Member Mary Mulhern are hosting a fundraiser in her bid for Hillsborough County Commission, District 7.

The event will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 26 the home of Mark Anderson and Keith Bucklew, 3110 W. Agawan St., Tampa.

Mulhern is prevented from running again for her current District 2 seat due to term limits. Instead, she is vying for the vacant non-partisan District 7 countywide seat, when term-limited Mark Sharpe leaves in 2014.
